The EU approves the Covid passport. Learn how it works

The certificate will be free, will be available in digital and printed format and can be requested by any EU citizen.

The certificate will be operational on July 1 and will collect information on whether its bearer has been vaccinated against the coronavirus, if he has antibodies after passing the disease or if he has already undergone PCR or antigen tests.

The certificate bears the name, date of birth and identity number of the holder, as well as the date of issue of the passport and information on the vaccine against Covid-19. It can be accessed free of charge, on paper and digitally.

The certificate, which will work for twelve months, will be binding throughout the EU for vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency, which has so far validated drugs from Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Jannsen.

The pact also includes the commitment of the European Commission to allocate 100 million euros from the emergency instrument to finance the acquisition of PCR tests.

How does it affect travel: will I be able to travel if I am not vaccinated?

The EU has insisted that being vaccinated is not an essential requirement to travel. Citizens who have not yet had the opportunity or those who have refused to receive the doses will be able to travel by demonstrating their status with a negative PCR or antigen test.
